Up and Away

   Once again, there will be a slight pause in these posts as I bolt off to help celebrate the 90th birthday of my mother.  First, how lucky all of us are, those of us who still have a parent (or parents), two human beings who brought you to life...no matter your relationship to them, the truth is that you wouldn't be here --be alive, even-- if at some point they hadn't gotten together.

   On the other side, imagine reaching that stage of your life...90 years!  It's quite a milestone and even for her, even at 90 years, it seems to have gone by so quickly.  So, we will be eating some cake and letting diets and livers and whatever throw caution to the wind for a bit.  It is time to celebrate, and to thank, and to acknowledge.

   In the meantime, I leave you with a few things to ponder.  For one, there is a world (quite descriptive of the size, actually) of talent out there taking photographs of...well, the world.  If you haven't had a chance to grasp the brilliance of these "amateurs," now is a good time as they are showing all 12 weeks of submissions...but here are just a few, including the one at the top, all featured from the entries in National Georgraphic Traveler's photo contest.

Vape...Or

  To begin, I am not nor have ever been a cigarette smoker, fate perhaps stepping in when I was just a lad of eleven or so and having my friend and I discover a discarded half-used cigarette in a back alley somewhere.   As kids are wont to do we felt that we had found an illicit treasure as enticing as if we had snuck into a peep show, because there was something to this smoking thing that we as kids didn't understand.  After all, sample packs of cigarettes were being given away everywhere...at the movies, at shopping centers, even at the fairs; and all the movie stars and adults we saw seemed to smoke, and smoked everywhere be it at work or when jetting around the world (luckily, my parents never did smoke cigarettes although my step-father was the tried and true MacArthur image of a pipe-smoker).  So, the half-used prized possession in hand, we somehow cornered a book of matches and excitedly lit the darn thing, that cigarette, taking a big drag as we'd seen i...

And the Winner Is...

     Our cruise, and thus these "travel" posts, were coming to an end.  We had seen a lot, from France to England/Ireland/Scotland and now, the remaining southern coastlines of Norway.  The variety was immense, not just in watching the peoples and hearing the languages, but even among the storefronts of food and fashion that changed before our hungry touristy eyes.  Gone were the magnets and (gasp) postcards, as if declared relics from a distant time capsule, one that held sweep-second wrist watches and ballpoint pens.  And just a few tee shirts and hoodies were visible, but not many, perhaps because of their $60 price tags.  But overall, shops were open for business as normal because our ship would generally dock quite close to actual towns.  Cruises came in now and then but apparently not so often that sidewalks and roadways were overwhelmed.  For many of us in our ship, waiting tour buses quickly swallowed us up and whisked us away fo...
